Summer Journalism Experience Application

  • The DrumBeat summer journalism experience is for incoming freshmen communications majors. It is a week-long training experience where applicants will work alongside student editors on the Back-to-School issue and first broadcast of The Drumbeat. Under the guidance of faculty advisers, students will spend each morning learning basic reporting, editing, layout and design skills. Each evening, students will do a team-building exercise or other group activity on or off campus. Students will also meet with local journalists and explore local newsrooms.
This is a competitive application program. Ten students will be selected by Communication & Student Media faculty from among applicants with preference given to students who have an interest in working with student media. No experience is necessary.
Applications will be due June 1. Students selected for the program will be notified by June 15. Students must submit a letter and $25 deposit by June 30 accepting their selection for the program to hold their spot.
The program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day Monday, Aug. 7 through Friday, Aug. 11, the week before convocation in August 2017.
