Homecoming is a vital part of college football, especially in Texas. Student Kamala Briggs said homecoming symbolizes “tradition, spirit, and community.”
The dedication of the TJC coaches and football players, along with the many students who kept the decades long drum beating tradition alive, led to an expected blowout at Saturday’s Homecoming football game.
TJC started the game off quick and strong with a touchdown from wide receiver Tray Taylor. The momentum kept steady with the 1st and 2nd quarters ending 7-0 and 42-0, respectively. Blinn College continued to trail behind in the 3rd quarter with a demoralizing 52-13. TJC added another victory under their belt, resulting in a final score of 52-27.
“We’ve just been practicing hard and putting the right people in the right places where we need to make plays. In offense and defense,” Defensive Back Jayveus Lyons said. “We played great as a team. Came out the first half on fire, but second half we just need to keep our foot on their necks.”
Wide Receiver Shatarius Williams called kickoff his favorite moment and described how, “it set the tone.” The band kept many attendees on their feet and the players quickly settled into the buzzing environment created by the audience.
Preceding kickoff, the highly anticipated Homecoming court elections were concluded. Koari Edmondson and Isaac Wells of the Black Student Association were crowned as Homecoming Queen and King.
