Las Mas’ biggest splash yet
TJC’s theatre is premiering “Moby Dick,” which is originally a nationally acclaimed novel written by Herman Melville in 1851 turned into a screenplay in the 1900s. “Moby Dick” is about a man named Ishmael (also the narrator) who has been a sailor for many years wanting to become a whaler. On his journey to get on a whaling ship, he becomes friends with a man named, Queequeg and they apply to work on a boat owned and captained by Ahab, who is a mysterious man with an obsession to hunt down the whale that took his leg, Moby Dick. TJC student Nathan Hill will be playing the role of Queequeg in the upcoming production.
Q: How do you manage to relate to the character?
A: He’s just a guy from the islands. He befriends the main character of the show Ishmael, and they go on an adventure together. And he’s kind of just along for the ride.
Q: In what ways do you think teachers and students might relate to some of the themes being presented in the play?
A: In our production, it’s taking a really cool twist on the story, and the adaptation is really cool. I feel like TJC students, they’ll be able to relate to some of the themes of, you know, feeling lonely, and just wanting more out of your life.
Q: Can you share some insights into what it has been like preparing for this production?
A: For me personally, I’ve never been a part of a show quite like this. But we put in the hours, for sure. First thing, four hours every day from 6:30 to 10 p.m. We’re really just working on our characters, why we’re telling the story and what the story means.
Q: How many productions again have you been in at TJC?
A: I think I’ve been in four so far. OK and it’s gonna be five.
Q: Do you think this show is being prepared a little differently than all the other ones?
A: For sure, just the way we do things in rehearsal and what we spend our time on is much different than if we were doing “Legally Blonde.”
