In every college athlete’s journey, there exists that one person whose influence ignites their passion for the game they love. For some, it may be a family member who spent countless hours playing catch in the yard and for others, it could be a coach whose guidance and belief in their potential sparked a flame within them to pursue excellence on and off the field. Whether it is a sibling or coach, this inspirational figure serves as a mentor, pushing the player to overcome challenges and lay it all on the line every time they step onto the field.
The connection shared among teammates extends beyond the field. Through the wins and losses, these players evolve from teammates to a family. They provide comfort during setbacks and inspire one another to excel both on and off the field. Through their steadfast support, the TJC softball players embody teamwork and good sportsmanship.
“I love my teammates; they make me feel better if I’m having a bad game,” Berlyn Grossman, sophomore outfielder, said. “I can come to them whenever I’m stressed or feeling discouraged throughout the game, so I can really rely on them a lot.”
Along with being a great teammate, it really starts with a determined coach. The impact a coach can have on one’s life is profound, shaping character, cultivating assurance and unlocking potential. At TJC, Coach Eric Henderson shapes the lives of his players by making them feel heard, motivating them to push themselves, and instilling confidence in each of them.
“He [Coach Henderson] has shaped me a lot because he is my first real coach that has actually put into me and cared about how I do,” Olivia Wright, sophomore outfielder, said. “He has helped me a lot, like pushing through the rough patches [in life].”
For some players, maintaining faith during games can be like having an invisible anchor, grounding players amid the competition.
“I like to remember that I’m not playing for myself, I’m playing for God,” Jolie Bazan, freshman outfielder, said. “I am blessed to play this sport; He is going to glorify me and I am going to glorify Him.”
Pregame rituals have been known to help get an athlete’s mind right. Pre-game rituals are like a playbook for athletes, providing a sense of structure and preparation for the game. From wearing lucky socks to eating a certain meal, these rituals offer a mental edge, which boosts confidence and focus. They are a way for players to get in the zone, mentally priming themselves for peak performance. Whether it is a superstition or a routine born from experience, pre-game rituals are a vital part of an athlete’s game day routine.
“If it is a home game, I will shower before and then jam out to some music and do my eyelashes and eyebrows,” Daniela Gutierrez, freshman shortstop, said. “If it is an away game, then on the bus I sleep for a while and then jam out to some music.”
