The 86th Annual Academy Awards – Liveblog

Off to a late start due to the weather, but it looks like we’ve only missed one award so far. Follow along with us as Editor-in-Chief Cory McCoy recaps the biggest night in film, moment by moment.

Best Supporting Actor – Jared Leto, Dallas Buyer’s Club.

Pharrell Williams takes the stage to perform “It might seem crazy” from Despicable Me 2.

Samuel L Jackson and Naomi Watts are presenting Best Costume Design.

Catherine Martin (wife of Director Baz Luhrmann)wins for the Great Gatsby and Sammy J does not drop a single F bomb.

DiCaprio applauds yet another coworker who wins an Oscar before him.

And Best Makeup goes to the team behind the Dallas Buyer’s Club, Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews

Indiana Jones Themesong is playing! Harrison Ford looks kinda tough with that goatee. I wander if Han is going through a midlife crisis in Episode 7?

Clips of American Hustle playing, cue the Science Oven jokes!

Channing Tatum is presenting student film makers. I think we have quite a few of those at TJC.

Ellen just gave Bradley Cooper, who lost out to Jared Leto, some scratchoffs as a consolation prize.

Alriiight, alriiiight, alriiiight! Matthew McCononotgonnabotherspellingthis has taken the stage to present Best Animated Short Film. Mr Hublot takes the Oscar.

And now for Best Animated Feature Film.

Let it goooooooooooooo!!!!!!! sorry, got carried away. Frozen won because it’s the best Disney cartoon since the early 90s. I’m a little biased, i’ve seen it 6 times.

Ladies and gentleman, we have a Bill Murray sighting!

I think that segment is called, “A refresher on 100 movies you need to watch, right now!”

Emma Watson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt present best Visual Effects. I dont know which of the two I love more.

Gravity wins. It was absolutely astounding in Big D 3D. Except for the hair. The hair not floating all wild drove me crazy. Does Vidal Sassoon make product for outerspace?

The Moon Song from the Spike Jonze’s Her is being performed. An absolutely beautiful song to accompany an incredible twist on a love story.

The Moon Song has the best shot at beating Let It Go for Best Original Song in my opinion.

That guy from SNL and Kurt Russell’s step-daughter are presenting best live action short-film. Helium wins.

The Lady In Number 6: How Music Saved My Life wins for Best Documentary – Short.

Totally not ok to cut people off when giving a touching speech about a beautiful old woman who died last week. Most cutoffs are rude, but that was outright disrespectful.

Bradley Cooper wins his scratchoffs and presents the Oscar for Best Feature Length Documentary to 20 Feet From Stardom.

Ma’am, that mic is definitely not set for you to sing into at the moment, but Bill Murray gave you a standing ovation, so we’ll let it slide.

Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin, and Pierro Totsi have been honored with the Governor’s Awards.

Angelina Jolie receives the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Presented by George Lucas no less. Years ago, Jolie said that she wanted to be remembered not as an actress, but as a humanitarian. Now she has an Oscar for each.

Apparently Jennifer Lawrence fell down again. This time on the red-carpet. Could she be anymore endearing? I hope she wins Best Supporting Actress based on the strength of her “Science Oven” rant from American Hustle alone.

Obi Wan Kenobi and Viola Davis are here to present Best Foreign Language Film. It’s fitting because he’s from a galaxy far, far away.

The Great Beauty wins, representing Italy. It’s first since Life Is Beautiful and Roberto Benigni’s amazing acceptance speech.

Madea presents a few more of the Best Picture nominees. The man who gave us Being John Malkovich might just win for Her.

Amy Adams is in ALL the movies this year.

Ellen changed her clothes just to introduce Brad Pitt. Pitt introduces U2’s performance of Ordinary Love.

Ooo a trailer for the 300 sequel. That will definitely not snag any Oscar nominations in 2015

Ellen is now taking selfies and celebrities are trying to photobomb her like mad. And it has reach full capacity. Jennifer Lawrence just groped Meryl Streep and both were totally ok with it!

Brad Pitt and Sherlock Kaaahn(!)berSmaug photobombed the Operative (from Serenity).

The other Michael Jordan is presenting highlights of the technical awards with Veronica Mars.

Thor is presenting Best Soundmixing with Charlize Theron standing in for Myew Myew.

All great movies, but Gravity takes another shiny. An Oscar for recreating all the sounds in space…

Sound Editing goes to Gravity as well. So much sound in the vacuum of space!

It should be noted that while the visual effects industry is honored, it is largely offscreen and Oscar winning companies shutter their doors at unprecedented rates due to outsourcing.

Christoph Waltz is here to present Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Unfortunately they can’t use his formula for winning Oscars. Step 1 Be Christoph Waltz. Step 2 Work with Quentin Tarantino.

Lupita Nyong’o wins for her incredible performance opposit Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years A Slave, directed by Steve McQueen. Not the one with the cool Mustang.

“No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid,” Lupita Nyong’o

Ellen got pizza and Brad Pitt is handing out plates. There’s gonna be about a million dollars worth of suits and gowns damaged. Thanks a lot Ellen.

Yikes! Livestream died. Found another just in time to see Gravity win another little golden man for Best Cinematography.

Was that an orchestral version of Kendrick’s “Cups”? I love her even more now.

Alfonso Cuaron and Mark Sanger win best Editing for Gravity. It’s somehow Cuaron’s first.

Whoopi Goldberg! Yay! Goldberg is introducing Pink, who is singing a tribute to the Wizard of Oz, marking 75 years since it debuted.

And the power is out, yet again.

And it’s back on. Ellen is now Glenda the Good Witch. What on earth happened in that 3 minutes that I missed?

Benedict Cumberbatch, or as I prefer Sherlock Kaaahn(!)berSmaug is presenting Production Design with Jennifer Garner. Can we just let Sherlock talk all night?

The Great Gatsby wins, deservedly so. The parties at Gatsby’s Manor were nothing short of breathtaking.

Technical difficulties due to the weather. I believe I missed Gravity winning another Technical award

Idina Menzel, the voice of Elsa from Frozen and a Broadway megastar, performing “Let it go!” This woman is so ridiculously talented.

Gravity wins, yet again, for best score.

“Let it Go” wins Original Score. It’s a pity Menzel doesn’t get a trophy because the song is nothing without her amazing voice.

Best Adapted Screenplay goes to 12 Years a Slave.

Best Original Screenplay goes to the incomparable Spike Jonze for Her. Jonze is a true visionary, willing to take risks no one else in Hollywood would dare.

Angelina Jolie and Sidney Poitier present Best Director. Sidney Poitier!!

Cuaron just got an Oscar from Sidney Poitier. It looks like shaking his hand meant more to Cuaron than the Oscar.

Daniel Day Lewis takes the stage and wins an Oscar for showing up! Ok, he’s just presenting Best Actress. Cate Blanchett wins for her role in Blue Jasmine.

They play off a heartfelt tribute to the star of a documentary who just passed, but let that speech rail on for an hour?

Jennifer Lawrence is now presenting Best Actor. Matthew McConaughey wins. DiCaprio chokes back tears. A local boy just won an Oscar!

HE JUST SAID ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT! Wooderson won a flippin Oscar!

The Fresh Prince of Damnation (Will Smith will always be that to me after his bizarre role in Winter’s Tale.) is presenting Best Picture. 12 Years A Slave pulls a surprise win over Gravity. I do believe it’s not quite as shocking as some will say.

The biggest surprise of the night is the telecast ending on time. Well, nearly.
