Halloween will soon kick off the festivities for the fall season. Inspired students have an opportunity to expose their creativity in light of the holiday at the upcoming costume contest.

The annual costume contest, hosted by the Art Club, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Jenkins Hall art department lobby. The costume contest is open for all students to participate and show their Halloween spirit.

“It’s such a fun opportunity to celebrate the holidays and to meet people, because I actually met a lot of people I didn’t know” said student Victoria Dickson, a previous contest participant.

One student, hospital volunteer and innovative mask designer in particular, Barry Jacobs, is expected to debut his creation at the upcoming event. Jacobs explained the artistic details of his mask and how recycling cancer radiation masks influenced his creativity.

“I made a few [masks], and I gave one to the American Cancer Society, and they use it to put hair pieces, wigs, over it to show how a wig would look on somebody, so that serves its purpose.” Jacobs said.

Students are encouraged to engage with their creative side and participate with an original disguise. Many previous participants created their look upon their skills, such as costume design and makeup art.

“My advice is to go for it and just not be embarrassed because everybody else is going for it too,” Dickson said about showing up and showing out in the contest. “I think it’s worth it, and I think it’s a fun way to get into the spirit of Halloween.”

Jacobs also wanted to provide upcoming participants with a heads up upon entering the contest, “Get some ideas about what you want to do, something different. Don’t copy something else, be original. …I always try to do things that I haven’t done before.”

Winning prizes include various gift cards to stores such as Hobby Lobby and many others. Pizza and refreshments will be served to all attendants, participants, and art club members.
