Top News: 4-year-old boy is safe, man who killed former TJC student has been captured.

Late last night: According to The Tyler Police Department via Monroe Police department in Louisiana, James W. Calvert was captured.

West Monroe Police Department were conducting a traffic stop on a gray, Buick LeSabre with Texas plates.  The vehicle failed to stop for the officer and a short chase ensued. After vehicle wrecked at a dead-end road, officers took Calvert into custody, who was wanted for Capital Murder in Tyler, Texas.  Officers observed a small boy in the rear seat identified as 4-year-old, Lucas Calvert. Officers recovered two weapons from Calvert’s vehicle at the time of the arrest, determining that this was the vehicle law enforcement agency, Tyler PD, was searching for nation- wide. Multiple news sources have stated that Lucas Calvert and his sister have been granted temporary custody to, Step-father and victims husband. The order has been grant by Judge Carole Clark of 321st District Court.

 

Former TJC student Jelena Sriraman, 30, was killed today by her ex-husband near Pollard Park on Amherst Drive and Bain Place in Tyler.

According to the Tyler Police Department, the alleged gun man was James W. Calvert, 41, of Tyler, who shot his ex-wife to death at 3315 Bain St.

Calvert is considered armed and dangerous.  Anyone with information about Calvert is urged to contact the Tyler Police Department at 903-531-1000, or Crimestoppers, at 903-597-CUFF (903-597-2833).  Crimestoppers has placed a $1,000 reward for information about the suspects location.

“On Oct. 31, 2012 at around 12:10 p.m. the Tyler Police Department received a call of a shooting in the 3300 Bain Place.  Upon arrival officers learned that James W. Calvert shot his ex-wife to death and abducted their 4-year-old child,”  Tyler PD said. “Officers and Investigators are searching for Lucas Calvert W/M DOB; 02-26-2008.  He is about 3 feet tall and weighs about 30-40 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.  He was last seen wearing a blue long sleeved sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. He was abducted by his father James W. Calvert W/M DOB: 12-03-1970 of Tyler, Texas.  He is 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 185 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.  He is believed to be in a 2000 Buick 4 door gray or silver in color, bearing a Texas license plate DP4-G858.”

The victim Jelena Sriraman, formerly known as Jelena Calvert attended TJC in the fall of 2009 and graduated in the fall of 2011 with a major in paralegal, according to TJC Registrar Andrea Liner.

Larry Craig, pastor of Southern Oaks Baptist Church, said Sriraman was trying to get on with her life after her divorce from Calvert.

According to Craig, the victim lived in church housing and worked at the Mother Day Out program for approximately five years.  She was in the process of trying to move to Houston with her new husband. But according to the divorce decree she wasn’t allowed to move farther than 150 miles from the Smith County courthouse. She had gone to court trying to increase the mileage separation so she could be with her new husband but still allow her ex-husband to visit with her son, said Craig.

The suspect had a prior arrest for aggravated assault/family violence in 1999 and multiple arrests for violation of a protective order, according to the Smith County Jail website.
