Campus theft activates Apache Alert

Students were awakened late Friday, April 4, to an Apache Alert sent by Campus Safety Chief Randy Melton.

Tyler Police dispatchers notified Campus Safety that a pizza delivery driver was robbed on campus. Melton said based on the information they had received it was best to send a warning.

“Because of timely warnings required by the Clery Act, we had to send a warning,” said Melton. “Once we sat down, talked to him and start an investigation, [we determined] it was a theft.”

Melton said the suspect reached in the delivery driver’s car, grabbed cash and ran. He said after the Alert was sent, a phone call was made to dorm employees to notify them of the situation.

The suspect, a resident of Bateman Hall, was arrested by campus officers Tuesday, and has since bonded out of Smith County Jail.
