Downtown Tyler fire update

A press conference was held at the Tyler Fire Department on Sunday to release information about the blaze that damaged four downtown Tyler businesses on Feb. 2.

“Spring Street will remain closed for the safety of the public,” Department Fire Marshal Paul Findley said. “There is no indication of how long the roads will be closed.”

Scott Sweetow, a special agent for the Bureau of Alchohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the cause of the fire is still undetermined, and will not be announced until they are certain of the source.

However, Sweetow did say they have determined that the fire started in the basement of building 113.

According to Sweetow, over 50 people have been interviewed multiple times to get accurate leads.

“All the leads, witnesses, businesses, is what brings us to here,” Findley said.
