Austin Huml is the student assistant for the TJC baseball team. He gets an inside look at what he wants his future career to be like while he is also getting an education. Although he is getting a head start at his dream career, he has to juggle managing a full-time job with the team and his studies.
Q: What is your role with the TJC Baseball team?
A: I am the student assistant.
Q: What inspired you to be a part of the baseball team here at TJC?
A: TJC has a great baseball program. They’re known and recognized on a national scale. I want to be a coach, so I wanted to get in with one of the best programs in the country. I want to learn from the best and help as much as I can.
Q: How do you balance school and baseball in your life?
A: I try to get my schoolwork done as early as I can, and as often as I can. Studying outside of baseball is important for me and being responsible with my time. I am at the baseball fields every day helping with practice or games, so it is a big part of my week.
Q: How do you see your position as student assistant of the TJC baseball team benefiting your future?
A: I definitely see it helping my future and benefiting me. If nothing else, this can go on my resume for the future. This is a great opportunity to meet other people in the industry and who knows maybe I will make great connections for my future.
Q: What life lessons have you learned from being a part of the baseball program at TJC?
A: I have learned how to be a part of a team again, and how to show up every day, not just for myself, but for the team and the staff.
Q: Would you say you have built personal connections with the players and staff?
A: Most definitely!
Q: What plans do you have for your future?
A: My plans for the future are to stay involved in baseball for as long as I can and hopefully work my way up to being a college coach.
Q: Do you feel like the coaching staff at TJC have been good role models for your career in the future?
A: Absolutely, they have shown me in just the short time that I’ve known them, how to handle business on and off the field. All the problems, or things that may come up outside of the program, and then how that translates back over to the program, and what needs to be done daily to be successful.
Q: What are your next steps in your education journey?
A: My next steps are to transfer out of TJC and hopefully attend the University of Texas in Austin and get my bachelor’s degree and then become a coach and start working my way up.
Q: If you got to choose your dream job where and what would that be?
A: My dream job would probably be baseball coach at the University of Texas. I don’t even know if it must be the head coaching job just on staff there would be amazing.
Q: If you had to give any advice to freshmen coming in who are interested in a position like yours, what would you tell them?
A: I would tell them to work hard, always help others, and don’t just do things because it benefits you. Go out of your way to help others and show up every day, put in all the work that you can. It’ll pay off eventually.
Q: Do you have anything else that you would like to add or any additional facts?
A: I’ve really enjoyed my time here at TJC especially being able to be a part of the baseball program now. I am super excited for this season and just super thankful. Go Apaches!
