The Apache Recreation Center at TJC is a central hub for student engagement, fitness and community building. Under the leadership of Director Adam Williams, the center provides a diverse range of facilities and programs designed to enhance student experience.
The Rec Center offers various amenities catering to different fitness and recreational interests.
“We have a weight room with free weights and machines, a yoga area, massage chairs, and lounge couches. Outside, we offer an 18-hole disc golf course, pickleball and basketball courts, as well as outdoor ping pong and cornhole,” Williams said.
In addition to individual fitness options, the Rec Center provides intramural sports programs, which have grown in popularity among students.
“After Spring Break, we’ll have soccer kicking off,” Williams said.
The availability of recreational facilities on college campuses has improved student well-being and academic performance. According to the American College Health Association, regular physical activity reduces stress, enhances cognitive function, and fosters a sense of community among students.
The Rec Center plays a significant role in fostering student life at TJC. Williams talks about how unlike many other junior colleges, TJC has prioritized recreational facilities, providing students with a space to exercise and build connections.
“It contributes to student life by giving students a place to go in their free time to exercise, connect with like-minded individuals, and create a sense of community and belonging,” Williams said.
Student employee Jordan Dunne echoed this sentiment.
“It’s a really welcoming and homey environment. Everybody’s very friendly. You can interact with people, co-workers, or even people that are working out here. It’s always fun to interact with people that you might not usually engage with in class or on campus,” Dunne said.
Recreational centers also provide an alternative to other social activities that may not always promote healthy habits. Research by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association highlights that students who participate in recreational activities report higher levels of satisfaction with their college experience and greater overall well-being. The Rec Center staff prioritizes ensuring a secure and welcoming space.
“We ensure a safe and inclusive environment by making sure students feel comfortable. Our staff is trained to be a resource for students, whether it’s helping with equipment or simply providing a welcoming atmosphere,” said Rec Center Manager DJ Abron.
Williams said the Rec Center follows the “See Something, Say Something” policy. They encourage staff and students alike to speak up if they notice anything concerning. This proactive approach helps maintain a positive and secure environment for all visitors. Continuous improvements keep the Rec Center aligned with student needs.
“Our most recent upgrade is a new piece of equipment, a hack squat machine, designed to better work the lower half of the body,” Williams said.
Looking ahead, TJC has ambitious plans for the facility.
“We have a five-year and a 10-year vision to create something that will better serve students in the future,” Williams said. These plans aim to expand and enhance the Rec Center’s offerings, ensuring it will remain a cornerstone of student wellness.
For students hesitant about using the Rec Center, the staff encourages them to start small and ask for guidance.
“If there’s something here that you want to take advantage of, or don’t know how to use, or feel apprehensive about, just ask our staff. Someone will have the answer,” Williams said.
Being in a new fitness environment can be intimidating, but the Rec Center staff is eager to assist students in their fitness journey. Abron reinforces this, offering advice for beginners.
“If you have a fitness goal or just need to de-stress, try a new piece of equipment every day. Even if it’s just coming in and getting on the bike for 10 minutes, small steps help build confidence until the gym becomes a routine part of your life,” Abron said.
Beyond fitness, the Rec Center fosters a sense of belonging and engagement within the TJC community. Studies show that physical activity contributes to academic success by reducing stress and improving concentration, states the American College Health Association. Additionally, students involved in recreational sports are more likely to develop leadership and teamwork skills, according to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association.
