Tristan Silence, a student at Tyler Junior College and a dedicated employee at the Apache Recreation Center, quietly leaves a lasting impression on and off the intramural soccer field. Hailing from South Africa, Silence’s laid-back demeanor, strong work ethic, and love for soccer have caught the attention of his friends, coworkers and supervisors — all of whom agree that he has a bright future ahead.
Growing up in South Africa, Silence spent much of his childhood at his grandmother’s house, developing a love for soccer that would eventually shape his life.
“Some of my best memories are from being at my grandmother’s house,” Silence said. “Whether it was playing soccer in the yard or just being around family.”
Silence’s passion for the sport took root during those long afternoons kicking a ball. As he grew older, that passion evolved into dedication, pushing him to hone his skills and dream of taking his talent beyond his hometown.
Coming to the United States was a big step for Silence, offering him the chance to chase his dreams. While adapting to life in a new country came with challenges, taking everything in stride.
“The biggest adjustment for me was understanding the value of money,” Silence said. “In South Africa, things cost a lot less compared to here. I had to get used to how much more expensive everything is and learn how to manage my money differently.”
The financial difficulties of moving to Texas were only the beginning of Silence’s challenges. The heat became a surprise, not foreseen.
“The heat here is something else,” Silence said with a laugh. “Back home, it gets warm, but nothing like this. The metal on my cleats actually melted. I couldn’t believe it.”
From learning the value of money to enduring the scorching Texas heat, Silence has faced these challenges head-on, proving his resilience both on and off the field.
At the Rec Center, Silence is known for consistency, strong work ethic, and quiet dedication. His boss, Rudy Cyrus, the coordinator for intramural sports, praised Silence for being a dependable and hardworking employee.
“Tristan is very hardworking and trustworthy,” Cyrus said. “You tell him to do something, and he’s on it without hesitation.”
Cyrus noted that his first impression of Silence was that of a quiet and reserved individual.
“I always thought he was quiet and laid back,” Cyrus said. “He doesn’t really talk much unless provoked, but once you get to know him, you see that he’s a lot of fun and has a great sense of humor.”

Cyrus also mentioned that Silence is a quiet person, but he is not distant, he is a person who cares and takes pride in his work.
“He’s not the type to speak up right away,” Cyrus said. “But once you get to know him, you see his fun side. He brings a different energy when he’s comfortable, and it’s contagious.”
While Silence may be reserved at work, he’s an entirely different person on the soccer field. His competitive spirit and passion for the game shine through every time he steps onto the pitch.
“I haven’t seen him play much, but the last time I visited the soccer field, he was a completely different person,” Cyrus said with a smile. “When he’s with his teammates, you see a more relaxed and talkative Tristan. He’s more professional at work, but when he’s on the field, you see the fun side of him.”
Errin Leak, a childhood friend and coworker of Silence’s, said, “Tristan is a leader in his own way. He’s not the loudest guy on the field, but when he speaks, everyone listens. His calm confidence makes him someone we all look up to.”
For Silence, the soccer field is where he feels most at home.
“Soccer is where I feel free,” Silence said. “When I’m on the field, everything else fades away. It’s where I can just be myself.”
That freedom allows Silence to be more vocal, encouraging, and connected with his teammates. Cyrus notices his leadership on the field.
“He’s got a good presence on the field,” Cyrus said. “You can tell he’s comfortable and confident when he’s playing.”
Silence finds his work at the Rec Center more than employment because it has allowed him to develop personally and professionally. The Rec Center’s diverse environment has provided him with essential communication skills, teamwork and adaptability training.
“Working with people from different cultures, I think I’ve learned a lot about how to connect with others,” Silence said. “It’s helped me develop patience and understanding, which I know will be valuable in whatever I do next.”
“Working with Tristan has been a learning experience for all of us. He’s not only grown as a worker but also as a person. He brings a perspective that we all can learn from,” Leak said.
Cyrus also recognized this growth.
“Being around people from all walks of life has definitely helped Tristan become more comfortable working with others,” Cyrus said. “He’s learning skills that will stay with him no matter what path he chooses.”
As Silence continues to pursue his passion for soccer and build his career, those who know him best believe that his dedication and talent will lead him to great opportunities.
“Tristan has the potential to go far,” Cyrus said. “He just needs the right opportunity, and I have no doubt he’ll take full advantage of it when it comes.”
Those who have worked and played alongside Silence have observed the continuous development as an athlete and person through their shared experiences of working and playing together. Whether on the soccer field or at work, Silence carries a quiet determination, earning the respect of those around.
“I see Tristan going far,” Leak said. “He’s someone who works hard and puts in the effort. He has the drive to succeed in soccer or anything else.”
Silence, however, remains silent and focused on the present.
“I’m just taking things one step at a time,” Silence said. “If something comes from soccer, that would be amazing. But I’m also learning so much through my work at the Rec Center that I know I’ll be ready for whatever comes next.”
Silence’s ability to balance a passion for soccer and work responsibilities has not gone unnoticed. Whether on the field leading teammates or quietly handling duties at the Rec Center, dedication remains evident. Those who know Silence best believe hard work and perseverance will open doors in the future.
As Cyrus said, “Tristan may be quiet, but his actions speak louder than words. He’s got something special — and I think the world is going to see it soon.”
