The Tyler Junior College Softball team broke its six-game losing streak by defeating Paris Junior College 3-1 on March 18 in their conference opener.
TJC set the tone early, earning a run in their first hitting period, in the bottom of the 1st. The Apaches created separation in the middle innings, while holding Paris to one run.
A major difference for the Apaches appeared at home plate, where the team showed major improvement. During their losing streak, the Apaches averaged less than 4 hits per game. However, they accumulated 8 hits and capitalized on their opportunities to keep pressure on the Dragons’ defense.
Head Coach Eric Henderson said the team looked at the game with a fresh mindset to open conference play.
“We told the girls it’s a new season. It’s conference opener. So we just started doing that. We started hitting with earners in scoring position, getting on base, doing what we have been struggling to do the last few weeks,” Henderson said.
The Apaches’ ability to perform well offensively showed in key moments, especially in the 4th and 6th innings, when TJC extended their lead by 2. Instead of depending on big plays, the Apaches would string together multiple hits in a row to score.
Freshman Outfielder Bethany Fan had 2 hits with 4 chances, leading the team in both “at bats” and hits.
Sophomore Outfielder Lindsey McKnight got to the home plate twice, leading the team in scoring.
In the pitching circle, Carlie Hrncir pitched consistently, limiting Paris to 3 total hits, having 1 error, and keeping the hitters uncomfortable during the game.
When Paris threatened, the Apaches’ defense responded efficiently and avoided costly mistakes to finish the game with a clean performance.
The win was important for TJC, as it ended a six-game losing streak and beat a strong Paris team, which entered the game with a record of 26-6. Paris entered the game with a .337 batting average and averaged 8.4 hits a game as a team. Starting conference play gives the Apaches momentum in a competitive conference where each game can have postseason implications.
“It’s huge. Paris, really, good friend of mine. They’re always ranked nationally, top, great team, but to start conference 1-0 is huge, especially in our conference, because you’ve got to steal games when you can,” Henderson said.
Beyond the result of the game, the Apaches’ performance strengthened the team’s confidence in its abilities to compete at a high level.
Henderson said the game showed what the team is truly capable of when they properly execute and play with consistency.
“And I know what we’re capable of, and now I think they’re starting to see it, so that’s very huge for us,” Henderson said.
With the conference opener behind the team, TJC will look to build on the momentum created from the 3-1 victory as they continue their season in league play.
The Apaches will attempt to carry the offensive attack and maintain defensive consistency in their upcoming matchups vs Trinity Valley Community College, Kilgore College, and Bossier Parish Community College.
